People seek individual therapy for many reasons. There may be aspects of yourself you wish to change. You may be contemplating important decisions or find yourself at a crossroads in your life. Therapy offers the opportunity to disrupt dysfunctional patterns of thought, behavior, and feeling (which are often established early in life) so that you may approach these and other challenges with more clarity, assurance, and grace.
Individual psychotherapy has been shown to offer a number of benefits, including: solutions to specific problems; reduction in distress, and; improved social relationships.
Through my experiences as a therapist, I have observed a strong tendency in people to avoid expressing certain emotions. Treatment often involves helping individuals to develop awareness of their internal feeling states and to approach, tolerate, and metabolize emotions rather than avoid them. When indicated, it can also involve helping patients to actively develop specific skills to help them manage and regulate moments of distress, including mindful breathing/relaxation, emotion regulation and distress tolerance exercises.
Working in a dependable, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship is often essential for personal growth. I offer my warmth, curiosity, and active presence in providing a safe space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Together we will build a trusting relationship that will allow you to work through the challenges you face in life.
